What is EITC?

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a benefit for working individuals and families who earn low or moderate incomes.  The EITC helps you get extra money back at tax time.

Do I qualify?

If you have a valid Social Security Number, you are a U.S. Citizen or resident-alien, your salary is within certain limits, and other applicable rules, you may qualify for a maximum benefit of approximately $6,000.  Even if you are not required to file a return.  Plus, you may be eligible for the Illinois EITC.

To help you get the largest refund possible, the IRS developed the EITC Assistant.  This tool will help you:

 Find out if you are eligible for EITC

 Determine your correct filing status;

 Determine whether your child(ren) meets the tests for a qualifying child;

 Find out the amount of your expected return.

Can I claim EITC for prior years?

Yes!, You can claim the credit for the past three years.  Complete Form 1040X or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

Will claiming EITC affect my public benefits?

Generally, no.  EITC does not count as income in determining eligibility for benefits like Medicaid, food stamps, SSI, Public Housing or cash assistance. Tell me more.
